Do I have to?

An exhibition of objects and drawings (known as "residues") will run at The Paul Kane Gallery from 17th August to the 8th September 2007.

The residues are positioned within the concept of Contaminated Art - a concept which the artist has been developing and working with for several years. Contaminated Art allows the artist to shift, as well as work within, the generally agreed parameters of contemporary art practice, and to access, among other things, the forces of the non-material and of the banal in order to achieve an unreferenced and even terrifying artistic energy.

As usual with this artist's work, there is evident pleasure in, and significance given to, the accessing of that which is beyond the created world through the joyful materiality of the making of art.

As a preliminary to the exhibition, small artworks (known as "nerbals") have been mailed by the artist to given receivers. These nerbals are emblematic counters and decoys which act, in their humility and through the simple force of image and text, to attract, deploy and invigorate that which is transitory and too awful or intense to be expressed in both the artist and the receiver.

A subsequent posting will disclose and project the subtle energies attracted through the nerbal and the August exhibition will reveal a final resting.
