The Nameless paintings are the culmination of fifteen years of practical and experiential research into consciousness and its transformation. They are rooted in eastern systems of observation-Raj yogic- and a western visual tradition. In these subtle open paintings, distinctly contrasting colour elements are brought through many layers to an ambiguous conclusion. The parts hover between autonomy and sublimation in the whole. Mark making that alludes to form is made minimal.
These devotional works are painted with rollers in a manner reminiscent of Zen raking. They evoke the spiritual as grounded and simple.
Chris Doris’ practice is unusual in its range of means from the radical public interventions (300 street pictures Dublin, Artists on the Boards, 40 Days and 40 Nights and Via) to a succession of critically acclaimed drawing, painting and printing shows (Icons & Monoprints, Samskaras, Sign of the Cross, Unearth, Lineage, Free State, 40 days, Balance etc.). Projects such as 40 Days and 40 Nights and Via have had deep engagement with the local community as well as wide national reach.
Chris has two further regional solo shows coming up this year, one in The Dock Gallery in Carrick on Shannon and the other 'Mindgames' in the Ballina Arts Centre, opening Thurs 8th June and running until Saturday 1st July.
