Megan Eustace graduated from C.C.A.D. in 1996 with a first class B.A. Hons Fine Art Painting; when she was awarded the Barry Maloney student of the year. She had her first solo show 'How many are there of you?' in the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Project rooms cork (1997), and has since been represented by The Paul Kane Gallery.

She was selected for 'Volume' 1997 at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, and was one of six artists along with Tony O' Malley and Janet Mullarney, selected for the Lavitt Gallery show 'Talking Sketchbooks' in 1998. In 1999 she was selected with 10 other emerging artists for ' First Look', curated by Patrick Murphy at the R.H.A., and was also included in the international drawing exhibition 'Drawing Thinking' at the R.H.A. that same year.

More recently Megan has had a solo show 'Cleave' 2004 at the Fenton Gallery Cork.

During the run of 'Why me, why not me...' at The Paul Kane Gallery in 2005 Megan's work was also represented in the 'Passing Through' exhibition at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery Cork, where 12 artists, including Alice Maher, Maud Cotter and Megan had been selected for exhibition from Crawford graduates of the last 30 years.

Artist's Statement

There is a journey experienced internally, back and forth, between polar views of any event or emotion. Currently our culture supports the 'why not me?' notion, as in; winning the Lotto, instant celebrity status and the intrinsic rather than the earned right to worth. The flipside to this is the 'why me?' reaction experienced when confronted with an unexpected trauma, a nonsensical accident or a life threatening illness.

Some of the pieces in this body of work both observe and present the model in this toing and froing; others present the subject in states of acceptance with the absence of inner turmoil.

The life model becomes the subject for me to manipulate; through the working process and the conté medium. Large reclining poses are labour intensive; I draw only a few feet away from my model, we are both on the floor, slightly uncomfortable. The medium is pushed, smeared, rubbed out, at times the figure struggles for existence under an oiled ground or obsessive rubbing. These poses suggest the need to move, leave, be unobserved.

With the kinetic studies I draw standing up at the wall straining past my shoulder, while my model repeats a sequence of actions over and over. I capture these poses at various stages; superimpose them on the one ground as a way of mapping the internal dialogue of the subject.

Our own need to be still, and at times our own desire not to be observed is often at odds with contemporary living, we live in a polarised world. 'Why me, Why not me?'is a portentous symptom of that world.
