Sicily.jpg Beginning on June 2nd, artist Michelle Rogers’ exhibition “Divine Love: Homage to Caravaggio” will be on view at the Galleria Civico Arte Contemporanea Montevergini in Siracusa, Sicily. The show consists of twenty oil paintings, five of which are large scale works, that create an unconventional homage to Caravaggio next to a church that houses one of his masterpieces.
“I came to Italy 15 years ago to study Caravaggio” says Rogers. “Beyond his immense technical ability, I was blown away by his radical vision that put ‘outsiders’ in positions of divinity and this is the legacy that I have embraced.” In her paintings, Rogers has cast marginalized contemporary figures—queers, prostitutes, displaced immigrants and despised Roma—in the roles of saints and martyrs.
Art critic Cathryn Drake, in her essay for the upcoming show, writes that “Rogers’ paintings transform the exhibition space—a former convent next to the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, where Caravaggio’s potent Burial of Saint Lucy hangs—into a temple dedicated to the divinity of the spurned. Within the context of Santa Lucia, a visionary who was blinded for her conviction in defying convention, Rogers has created a refuge for those who wish to worship unconditional love.”
The show runs until the 29th June.
